Gentle Whispers

One night as my children and I had said goodbye to the day and had begun our nightly rituals, I had the 700 Club television show on and they were watching it with me.

During one of the segments, the show discussed the washing of feet. I cannot remember everything about the dialogue but what I do remember is that they were talking about how Jesus washed the feet of His disciples.

Later that night they came to me and asked why Jesus would do such a thing. I could tell they had been discussing it and were not able to answer their own questions.

I explained to them how this was a way to express love. That Jesus was humbling Himself to His disciples and showing His love to them. That it was a custom then to do this; it was not a strange thing like it is today.

The next day, the kids met me at the car. They were so excited about something, but I had no idea what. They made me close my eyes and they lead the way to our apartment door. Next, they made me sit on the couch. I hear them clacking pots and pans, and giving each other orders. I thought, “Oh, no! They are cooking! Should I stop them before this gets out of hand?”

Then they came to me at the couch and started taking off my shoes. I am baffled, really. I did not have a clue. Then they said in unison…”Open your eyes, Mama!” As I opened my eyes, they took my feet, placed them in a large pot of warm water, and started washing my feet.

I am stunned. I am amazed! I am thrilled! I am not sure how long it took me to say something. Can you imagine? My 12-, 10- and 5 year-old children are washing my feet. And they know what they are doing…they are humbling themselves to me and showing their love. Tears still come to my eyes when I remember that day, and do now.

Children are amazing. They so readily trust and show their love without abandon.

Father, give us wisdom in caring for our children; teaching them in love; taking time to give them explanations to their questions. Open our eyes to how valuable they truly are and help us honor them in the way we raise them.

Psalms 127:3 Children are a gift from God; they are His reward. (LB)
